Born in November 1885 in San Gabriel California, George S. Patton, at a very young age, decided his goal in life was to be a hero. His ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. Growing up with stories of their brave exploits in these wars, it is no wonder why a young George Patton had these visions of grandeur and would endeavor to fulfill this life long dream.
Patton spent one year at the Virginia Military Institute and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in June, 1909. He became a Second Lieutenant in the 15th Calvary Regiment. His first experience in battle was under another legendary general, General John J. Pershing. Patton gained fame in his border attacks against Pancho Villa's men and was promoted to Captain.
In 1917 during World War I, Patton became the commander of the United States Tank Corps. He and his men, along with the allied British tankers, won the very first major tank battle in Cambrai, France in 1917. After his victory in Cambrai, Patton established an American Tank school in Bourg, France. With 345 tanks in his command, he was again successful in the battle of the Meuse-Argonne Operation which won him the Distinguished Service Cross for Heroism.
With World War II on the horizon, Patton convinced a leery congress for the need of an armored force. In 1940 the Armored Force was formed and in April 1941 George S. Patton was named Commanding General of the Second Armored Division.
December 1941, the United States entered World War II. In November, 1942 Patton commanded the Western Task Force that invaded Northern Africa where, again, Patton was successful in overpowering the German forces. His success carried him to Sicily, Italy, where he commanded the Seventh Army in 1943. He was victorious in his liberation of the Sicilian population.
In 1944 General Patton was given the command of the Third Army in France. Patton's army raced across over 600 miles of enemy territory, from Normandy France, through Belgium, Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia, liberating thousands upon thousands of people.
In October 1945, General George S. Patton was now in command of the Fifteenth Army in American occupied Germany. On December 9th Patton was injured in an automobile accident that he succumbed to on December 21st. Patton was buried among the fallen soldiers that died in the Battle of the Bulge in Hamm, Luxembourg. The controversy surrounding the death of General Patton stemmed from his bitter discourse with certain American leaders who were supposedly in cahoots with Russian leaders and that had cost American lives. To this day there are historians who are still investigating these allegations.
