Mother of a Soldier
I am the mother of a 21 years old soldier who ever since he was a small child had, in turn, chosen to be in the military by the time he grew up. Despite hardships, setbacks, and not bein a citizen, my son overcame everything to make his dream come true. He is very family oriented, and educated under caring guidelines. He is an only child, but was always surrounded by the love of cousins and friends. He came to the United States to finish high school, and did four years of ROTC. By the time he became a permanent resident, he decided to join the Army. He had to pass a lot of tests: physical, mental, of character. He did succeed. He decided to be an infantryman. He did succeed. His love for this country made him enlist. Right now he is in a combat zone. Thanks to the bravery and sacrifice of thousands of soldiers who preceeded him, he is at a much safer place. Unfortunately, blood had to be shed to overcome violence. What an irony! He protects you and I. His days and nights are filled with tasks, small tasks, that combined with the ones performed by all his other brothers-in-arms, make a big difference. A difference we can sense and feel here, in mainland, in the form of peace. A difference people in the land he is in can sense and feel too. Our soldiers do not know of politics. They are doing a job. They are following orders. They are not the ones calling the shots. For their commitment, their dedication, their sacrifice, their humility, we all should be grateful. Grateful for the nights they cannot spend in a cozy, warm bed. Grateful for the homemade food they can only dream of. Grateful for the little things we enjoy daily without even realizing their cost...we take it for granted. Soldiers, they do not. because they do not know when they will enjoy them again, if ever.
It brings tears to my eyes when I hear a patriotic song, when I hear the national Anthem. It shrinks my heart to know about our casualties. About the losses. Not only of our troops, but also of innocent civilians caught in this terrble, horrible way of living call war. If there was a way that we could all close our eyes, and when we open them, there is no war...there is no hatred...there is no violence...It is an impossible dream. So I just close my eyes and try to envision this impossible dream. It brings tears to my eyes...
