Corinth, Missippi: a Little Known Siege of the Civil War

From Shiloh, Tennessee we drove the twenty-two miles south to Corinth, Mississippi located in the Northeast corner of the state.  Most people have heard of the Battle of Shiloh, one of the bloodiest in the Civil War, but few know about the siege of Corinth. Cornith during the 1860s was a major railroad crossing connecting the North to the South and the East with the West.  Capturing Corinth from the Confederacy would be a major victory for the Union, because it would disrupt rail service and the movement of men and supplies.  The Visitor Center, which is part of the National Park Service, is only one year old and rates four stars; a not to be missed place. They present a film on a wrap-around screen about the Battle of Shiloh and another film on the siege of Corinth.  This siege occurred in two stages.  The first one happened from April 29-May 30. 1862. The Confederacy had built seven miles of fortifications facing the North and East.  The Union brought down over 120,000 men under Gen. Halleck and had numerous skirmishes with the rebels. Gen. Beauregard  and most of the town's people abandoned the town in the middle of the night on May 30, because he knew that he was outnumbered and could not hold the town.  The Union took over the town and reinforced the defenses.  The VC is located on Battery Robinett, one of the largest earthworks.  Corinth has the largest number of intact Civil War Earthworks in the nation.

On October 3-4, 1862, the Confederacy tried to retake Corinth under the leadership of Earl van Dorn.  He was faced with equal numbers of soldiers under Rosecrans and was unable to penetrate the defenses and capture the city.  This loss led to the eventual fall of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863 and the closing of the Mississippi River to the Confederacy.
