Attitudes in Living - Semper Fi
I am the daughter of a United States Marine. When I was born, my Dad was in Vietnam. He left when Mom was about seven months pregnant with me. On the night of my birth, Dad's position got attacked, lots of good men were lost, and the only word he was able to get from the Red Cross was that his baby arrived. It took him two weeks to find out I was a girl. Dad retired after 21 years of honorable service and I can say truthfully, "Once a Marine, Always a Marine!"
I grew up with a house filled with young Marines who were far from home. One year on Thanksgiving, my Dad drove up and down the highway outside of the base and picked up Marines to come eat dinner with us. I can tell stories of the Chosin Reservoir and Iwo Jima. I can sing the entire Marine Corps hymn. November 10th (the Marine Corps birthday) in our household is just as big as Christmas.
In part because of my Dad's duty to his Country, I entered adulthood with a set of values that are built on Marine Corps' tradition. I love my country beyond belief including its flaws. Being a Marine is about being of service and I knew no matter what career I chose, it had to embody that principle. My Dad taught me to stand strong even when I wanted to buckle at the knees. He showed me what commitment was by knowing that Mom had raised me while he served on foreign soil so we could be safe. Anyone who knows a Marine knows their motto -- Semper Fi (Always Faithful).
Yes, my dad is a tough old Marine. But it didn't stop him from the joy of us recently going on a trip to Disney World. His first day there, at the Magic Kingdom, he was chosen to be the Honorary Veteran of the Day which included a ceremony to retire the flag and a parade. It's wonderful to see current and retired members of our Armed Forces recognized for their bravery and courage. If you haven't done so lately, take the time and thank a man or woman in uniform for their invaluable role of providing the blanket of freedom we all sleep under.
