Bicycle Helmlets
A bicycle helmet is a bicyclist’s last defense against traumatic brain injury, cranial fractures, and even death. Bicycle helmets are vitally important pieces of equipment for learning bikers all the way to professional cyclists. No matter what your skill level; accidents are bound to occur. For those bicyclists unprepared to deal with these accidents through proper safety protection, such as bicycle helmets, the results could be life altering if not life ending.
Bicycle helmets are basic in the manufacturing process, but there purpose is to protect the complex minds and body systems of their users. The shell of a helmet is designed to protect the cranium and brain of bike riders in the event of a collision, accident, fall, or crash. The shell of bicycle helmets is usually made from a form of fibers interwoven with resins. Other forms of helmets utilize lightweight metals, alloys, plastics, or forms of fiberglass. Almost all versions of helmets contain foam inserts on the inside of the shell. These spongy foam inserts serve a dual purpose. First manufacturers keep in mind the comfort of the helmet wearer and use foam to pad the helmet during use to prevent uncomfortable abrasions or bruising. The second, and more integral function of the spongy foam inserts, is to conform the hard shell of the bicycle helmets to head of the users. The users then experience better coverage of their cranial areas and are less likely to suffer jolting or movement of the helmet in the event of a crash, collision, or fall.
Besides the basic shell of the helmet, several important attachments aid in the protection when using bicycle helmets. Bicycle helmets usually include a chinstrap. Chinstraps are pieces of cloth or leather that attach the shell of bicycle helmets to an individual’s head securely using a clasp at the bottom of their chin. Chinstraps prevent bicycle helmets from flying off a rider’s head in the event of quick head movements or a fall from the bike. Besides chinstraps, several other accouterments to bicycle helmets protect the safety of bikers and other pedestrians, bikers, and drivers. Side-attachments to the bicycle helmets sometimes include rearview mirrors. Rearview mirrors are especially important for riders that frequent busy roadways or paths. These safety features not only protect the rider, but car drivers and other people as well. Another device added to bicycle helmets to improve their vision is a visor. When biking outdoors, the sun tends to blind bikers at some points in the day. A visor significantly reduces the risk of temporary blindness and loss of control in these situations.
Overall, any person riding a bike is heavily recommended to utilize a bicycle helmet. Helmets definitely save lives, and one day, a helmet could save yours as well. Injuries such as cranial fractures, concussions, traumatic brain injury, and brain hemorrhaging will undoubtedly bring an end to an easy Sunday bike ride, but this does not need to be the case if riders always choose to wear their bicycle helmets.
