Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C
If you are in Washington, D.C. or planning for your visit over there, then no doubt you will explore some of the magnificent sites and attractions of the place. So for this, you should know the attractions and places of interests in America where you can visit and see what Washington DC has to offer to you. In this case, one place that you should explore is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, which is a pride attraction of the Washington D.C.
This attraction honors the U.S. service members of the United States armed forces who gave their lives by fighting in the Vietnam War. They were the service members who passed away in the service in Vietnam/South East Asia. With this, the people who died also include those were accounted for the missing in action during the war. In honor of those who gave their lives in the war, a memorial was built. The construction as well as the related issues gave birth to numerous controversies, out of which, some of the controversies were resulted into the incorporation of the memorial complex. Today, the memorial is comprised of three separated divisions that are the Three Soldiers statue, the Vietnam Women's Memorial, as well as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall that is the renowned part of this memorial.
Inspired by Jan Scruggs, who was an infantryman – served with the 199th Light Infantry Brigade of US Army in Vietnam; the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is something that fills everyone's heart with immense feelings and thoughts. However, after exploring it, people feel very lucky that they got a chance to experience the wartime of those days. Jan Scruggs was a man who first saw The Deer Hunter in March 1979 and then it reminded him of the people whom he had seen endure and die in Vietnam. Without thinking much, on the same night, he decided to construct a memorial that will possess everyone's name those killed in the Vietnam War.
The main part of the memorial was completed its construction in the year 1982 and is located in the Constitution Gardens that is adjoining the National Mall. It lies just towards the northeast of the Lincoln Memorial. The United States National Park Service preserves the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and this memorial receives some 3 million visitors every year. The Memorial Wall was actually designed by the United States landscape architect Maya Lin. Datalantic in Atlanta, which is in Georgia was performed the typesetting of the original names on the wall. There are total 58,159 original names on the wall that was performed by Datalantic.
The wall is made up of two black granite with a height of 246 feet and 9 inches. The granite was actually brought from Bangalore in Karnataka, which is in India and the reason behind bringing the granite from India, is just because of its reflective quality. Visit the Vietnam Women's Memorial that lies at a short distance towards the south of the wall and towards the north of the Reflecting Pool. This memorial was designed by Glenna Goodacre and was dedicated to the women of the United States who were served entirely in the war. It was dedicated on 11th November 1993 and most of the women were the nurses who served in the war. In this, the woman who is looking at the upward direction is named as Hope, the woman praying is named as the Faith, and the woman nursing to an injured soldier is named as Charity.
