The War Against Iraq And Afghanistan
Introduction
"no more poison factories, no more executions of dissidents, no more torture chambers and rape rooms." (Geldof, 2008) The latter words were assurances from US president George W. Bush during his famous March-2003 speech. At that time, he was justifying his reasons for declaring war on Iraq. President's Bush main reasons for attacking Iraq and Afghanistan may be summarized as follows; to stamp out terrorism in the world, to protect the US and the rest of the world by capturing weapons of mass destruction and to protect Iraq and Afghan citizens from abusive governments such as Saddam Hussein's regime. However, Bush has failed to achieve any of the above objectives. First, Afghanistan and Iraq's political systems have been destroyed after US's military intervention. Second, the US never found the so-called weapons of mass destruction and lastly, terrorist activities have not been eliminated.
Why the war on Iraq and Afghanistan is an absolute failure
US policy on Afghanistan was largely shaped by the September eleven bombings. The attacks shook up the Bush administration because their adversaries were able to penetrate one of the most sensitive and well-guarded buildings in the land. (Knickmeyer, 2006) Consequently, the Bush administration made drastic changes in its foreign policy. They firmly believed that the Alqaeda terrorist group caused the attacks. (Knickmeyer, 2006)At that time, the Taliban governed Afghanistan and were linked to Alqaeda. The US government singled out Osama bin Laden as the mastermind behind the bombings and as a result of this, the US government forced Afghanistan to release Osama or else they would declare war against them. (Knickmeyer, 2006)All these activities were still part of their efforts to combat terrorism. While the intentions of the US government may have been noble, they went about it in the wrong way. First of all, the US did not give any form of proof about the allegations they made against Osama Bin Laden. Instead, they opted to impose directives on the Afghan government. Even when other international parties, such as the UN, Spain and German governments asked for proof to substantiate their claims, the US did not oblige. (Knickmeyer, 2006)Additionally, there were numerous prisoners arrested by the US government after allegedly participating in terrorist activities yet there was no solid proof to indicate that those individuals were in fact terrorists. (Knickmeyer, 2006)
The US also invaded Iraq in order to fight unlawful government regimes such as Saddam Hussein's government. Some people claim that this was the only objective that Bush managed to achieve because Saddam was caught, tried and hanged. However, this claim is not necessarily true. (Sabrina, 2005) If the Bush administration were sincere about protecting the rights of the Iraqi people against an abusive government, then they would have restored peace in the country. Iraqi people' lives should have improved tremendously after Saddam Hussein's capture and death. However, the opposite case has occurred. Many people in Iraq believed that their lives were bearable under Saddam, but are almost non-existent under the US led war. The US army has failed to restore peace in Iraq and its people have become victims of human rights abuses. Immediately after the US government attacked Iraq's capital, Saddam was overthrown and this caused a power struggle. (Sabrina, 2005)Consequently, the US led invasion agitated the Iraqi people even further and resulted in a series of resurgences. The US army was also hypocritical about protecting human rights. For instance, they have been accused of capturing hundreds of prisoners at the notorious Guntanamo Bay. (Sabrina, 2005)The US government denied them a right to fair trail asserting that there were dangerous to society. Besides this, there have been problems with the way members of the US army treat Iraqi prisoners. The world has seen some disturbing pictures about the war. Some US army men and women have treat though prisoners in an inhuman manner by torturing or abusing them. (Sabrina, 2005)
The most embarrassing and unsuccessful objective among all the others was confiscation of weapons of mass destruction. The Bush administration believed that the Iraqi government was preparing a huge weapons program. (Steele, 2006) The US secretary of State had put out these assertions during his meeting with the UN in 2003. At that time, he gave ‘evidence' about the presence of nuclear programs by citing aluminum tubes in the country. (Steele, 2006)They also claimed that the Iraqi government was working on anthrax as a biological weapon of mass destruction. Through these assertions, he managed to convince the UN to conduct weapons' inspection within Iraq. However, nothing was found. (Steele, 2006)The aluminum tubes could not be used for a nuclear program as they were inappropriate. Besides this, the few plants found there were outdated and did not pose a threat to humanity. (Steele, 2006)
Conclusion
The war in Afghanistan and Iraq was a mistake on the part of the US government. Their objectives for attacking these latter countries were unfounded because they did not give evidence to support their claims. Besides this, the war has only worsened the humanitarian crises in these respective countries. (Murphy, 2006) Consequently, Iraq and Afghanistan would have been better off if the US government had never intervened militarily. A better approach would be through diplomatic avenues. In fact, the US has created opposite sentiments as stated by AlQaeda leader al Rahman; he said ‘The most important thing is that the jihad continues with steadfastness ... indeed, prolonging the war is in our interest' (Murphy, 2006)
