Troop Withdrawals
The liberals are going to be up in arms- more than normal. The surge seemed to work at first and now the violence is returning. Bush knows he can't "surge again", so the next best option is to halt the withdrawals. No more troop withdrawals? For whatever good that might do you can expect the opposition in Iraq, with their Iranian friends to step up the pressure and violence.
President Bush ordered an indefinite halt in U.S. troop withdrawals from Iraq after July, embracing the key recommendations of his top war commander. Bush said that Gen. David Petraeus will "have all the time he needs" to evaluate further withdrawals.
Patraeus is now off the hot seat again for a few months; however, he still has a near impossible mission- the real "Mission Impossible". You can bet that Muqtada al-Sadr will increase his efforts.
In another major decision, the president announced he will seek to relieve the heavy strain on the Army by reducing the length of combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan to 12 months, down from the current level of 15 months. He said the change would take effect on Aug. 1, and would affect U.S. forces already deployed on the front lines.
Bush said U.S. force have made major gains since he ordered a buildup of about 30,000 U.S. forces. "We have renewed and revived the prospect of success" the president said. Well, I'm sure that's not what Obama nor Hillary think. And McCain has painted hiumself into a corner by supporting the surge. What if it doesn't work? What if things fall apart between now and November?
