Learn About The Swords Carried by International Diplomats
An International Diplomat is someone who has been appointed to represent a particular government and who has relations with people from other governments, sort of like a Liaison. Diplomats that reside and represent nations all over the world have used the Sword as part of their formal attire. Swords that were used by Military Troops have always been regulated, this you'd only see them using a particular type of Sword.
However Ambassadors have a lot of latitude regarding the type of sword they carry, so you could end up seeing them one of many variations of this Battle Weapon. American Diplomats started using Swords around the 1800's. These were generally Short in length and the blade was typically anywhere from 36-38 inches. Around the 1850's the American Diplomats used to carry a Sword with a straight blade that was tapered on each side and had a fine point on the end of it.
Often the bottom of the blade was decorated with beautiful Military Insignas. Members of the Japanese Military Corps carried dress swords suspended by either a black velvet frog or a White Silk shoulder belt. They had a black covered wooden scabbard with two mounts. The locket obverse is particularly decorated and has a frog stud in the form of a leaf. The chape obverse is fully engraved and terminates with a ball finial. A variation of the scabbard engraving between the two grades has been noted but it's uncertain whether a rank differential was intended or if this was only a manufacturers variation.
The German Diplomats often used the Damascus Blade Diplomatic Corps Sword. This was considered one of the most beautiful Swords of the Third Reich. It has a very long, thin pointed blade. The pattern comes with a flowing serpentine and floral look. A fine damascus blade isn't available in any online retail shop and would cost someone a small fortune. Diplomatic Corps Officers were recruited from German Nobility. The sword blade is typically 37 1/2 inches including the Scabbard. The fittings include very heavy silver plating.
So the truth of the matter is, people from almost every nation have their own Diplomatic Swords they use. The style, length, scabbard and other factors depend on what country you are from and what the diplomat wants to carry.
