Derived from a French word, appliqué means something that has been applied. Appliqué is one of the embroidery techniques that involves pieces of contrast color fabric in various shapes are sewn on the surface of the base fabric creating attractive and decorative pattern. While mostly appliqué work uses fabric in different shapes and color, different materials are also often used such as rexin, suede, velvet, etc. The art of appliqué is quite prevalent in Africa. In India, this art is widely popular especially in the Puri district of Orissa.
Even though this art is used mainly in handicraft items, outfits with appliqué work look extremely attractive. There is a rising trend of sarees flaunting striking appliqué work. If the patch is not stitched properly, the edges would eventually be frayed which can even lead to the patch being completely removed. Apart from appliquéd motifs all over the saree, a single huge and bold appliqué motif on the pallu of the saree featuring embellishments look equally striking. Attractive appliqué sarees are the surest way to fetch admiring glances.
