Whose Life is it Anyway?
Terrorist attack on Mumbai. Macabre, ghastly and gruesome. Dance of death at its worst! Blood and flesh. Charred and mutilated bodies. Hundreds of lives lost. All innocent! Families devastated. Mothers and fathers lost their children. Nation lost its brave men. A proud nation’s character was challenged. Its soul under siege; its spirit under blockade.
Even Devils must have shed many a tear , albeit without wanting to be noticed.
The Common Man is still in a state of shock. He does not know whom to blame for the catastrophe. Cruel fate? Passive attitude of a tolerant nation? Or its politicians?
These politicians, he remembered , keep promising him with Sun on one hand and a Moon on the other. ‘Let me go and ask one of them if anything such as public accountability exists!’ he thought. He managed to get hold of one.
Common Man: While this deadly phenomenon was unfolding, we did not see much of you and your clan. Where were you?
Politician: We kept ourselves away from the scene of tragedy with a purpose. We would not have been able to bear the pain and agony of innocent people. We would certainly have had a nervous breakdown. Personally, I was choked up. But even in those moments, I was thinking about our people. These are trying times. We should maintain our cool, composure and equanimity.
Common Man: What is your message to the terrorists?
Politician: ‘You the enemies of humanity, forget not, we shall not cow down to your dastardly acts. You can kill our bodies but not our spirit. Our people will die but they will rise like phoenix birds from the ashes.’
Common Man: What do you think we should do now?
Politician: Mumbaikars never say die! They are resilient !
Common Man: Resilient? I do not understand what that means. We are helpless. If we do not get out for work, who will feed our ageing parents and young children ? Is it right to camouflage our vulnerability and defenselessness with such glorified deceptive expressions?
Politician: You see, small incidents such as these are bound to happen in big cities. In a population of 1 billion plus, 200 people is …. just 0.00002%. Never over-react! It is high time that media stops exaggerating such incidents.
Common Man: Our government is spending more than 70 mn Dollars every year on politicians’ personal security. People are asking as to why taxpayers’ money be spent on insensitive and irresponsible politicians. Those funds could be used to better-equip our security forces. A new concept of Z security for politicians is emerging . ‘Zero Security’ ! People strongly feel that henceforth politicians should compulsorily undergo ‘Black Cat Commando Training’ so that in the event of any future terrorist attacks, they could be sent for rescue operations. Do you agree?
Politician: We are ever prepared to sacrifice our lives for the people of this great country. But we have a more meaningful task of nation building. Our security men are doing a wonderful job and we do not want to come in their way.
Common Man: The perception among people today is that our real threat is not from terrorists but from politicians who have focussed solely on vote banks, divide and rule policy and have betrayed us.
Politician: Well, I can understand that people’s sentiments are running high at this time. Rest assured, we will hound and hunt the terrorists. We will punish them. We are a sovereign nation and we shall do whatever is needed to protect ourselves. My party is committed to this. Vote for us and we shall do the rest!
Common Man: Thank you sir. Your words have filled me up with optimism, sanguinity and hope. See you after the next terrorist attack!
