She is one special lady
For those who have had to struggle to find happiness and completeness I want to tell the story of this woman I know who has been to hell and back several times. It all begins with a tale of two very young and spirited kids, who dated, fell in love and married. They were the envy of the neighborhood. Friends and relatives would see them and comment about how good they looked together and seemed to be enjoying themselves. But there were underlying problems that all around them did not see and the two lovers failed to recognize.
She was the prettiest girl in the neighborhood. All the guys would fantasize of relationships they wished they had with her. The girls would eventually concede this pretty young girl was head and shoulders above any of them and then take their place in line picking up the scraps for their compensation. The pretty young girl caught the eye of a returning Viet Nam vet and when he turned away the others making bids on a future, she granted him her life to share "till death do us part."
The young man was so enamored by the essence and character of this young lady that he made a decision to "have and to hold" her forever. And the two became one, to the dismay of those who wanted one or the other. The others needed to swallow this and accept the fact that the youngsters were now a pair.
Life at the onset was relatively pleasant for the young couple. They interacted with family and friends as was expected and they enjoyed each other's company while making an effort to learn this ritual that they knew nothing about. She worked as contemporary young ladies did in those days. He continued his allegiance to the people he cared about and became a member of a metropolitan police department.
Little anomalies never seemed to deter either from what they believed their mission was. Each would refrain from questioning inconsistencies in this marital machination. He would spend countless hours away from home and she would wonder what he was doing. The marriage became strained by the lack of recognition that trouble was brewing and soon the pot would boil over.
He was troubled by a lover who had taken him far beyond the ecstasy of natural relations. He was engulfed and absorbed in a disease he had no idea existed. He lived for the rush of making a bet, of wagering who could score more points or catch a ball or run faster than any other horse. His ladies were faces on plastic coated rectangles and they only were subservient to their King and one pip cousin. Nights often turned to days wishing that the two six-sided cubes would bring him fortunes beyond belief.
All the time the pretty young wife sat alone convinced that she had not been attentive or proficient and her husband was seeking the skills of another. She pined for his touch to return to that which he had when he whisked her away from her youth. She hung on to a belief he may return to her. They were making failed attempts to conceive and the harder they tried the more distracted her young man appeared to become.
Finally, when there seemed to be no future, he came to her and told her she must go, that he had cheated on her and fathered a child with a woman he barely knew and the best solution to the problem was divorce.
My God, what had he done! This seemingly warm and gentle soul had turned to the antithesis of what he had represented for the eight years she knew him. He was a bastard not thinking of her fragility at a time when she needed him to stand by her and create a magical event that would bring the two closer by way of parenthood. He was cold as the breeze that makes one shudder the first raw day in November. She was devastated but still true to whom she was, she took a step to the side and felt that he needed this in his life and she allowed him to escape with her love and kindness in tow.
Off they went that somber September day not knowing what would take place in the decades to come and not understanding how through divine providence they would step back into each other's life to settle what was left lying in a heap so many years before.
In the years to follow much took place in the lives of our two young friends. Each of them set out on a road that brought excitement, joy and pleasure. They planted their roots in marriages and each had children of their own to cherish, love and care for. They took advantage of being a parent to employ the skills each had been brought into this world with. Each had innate gifts that made them very distinctive and unique. Each could give of themselves until they bled the compassion of a messiah, a champion, a benevolent soul, there to tend to the needs of others, never to be concerned for themselves.
She grew into a fine and striking woman. Giving birth to adorable girls that were destined to share all the traits and qualities she possessed. She moved forward in an unassuming and humble manner all the time waiting for the answer to what love and companionship was about. But time passed and as the sands of the hourglass fell she became a target. She was a target of a strange relationship that would inflict wounds of the mind and soul but most visibly injuries of physical abuse. She fought for her well being in a world that she should have never been exposed to. Her body would be subjected to violence and her mind would be tormented by the outrageous actions of a man in need of much more than our heroine could furnish. Eventually she made a decision to end the insanity and she took her two children and went boldly into the unknown with thoughts of making all that was wrong, right some day.
The next several decades were to say the most demanding and difficult for this now single mother. She would have to raise the two bubbly little girls, being mother, father, friend, companion and healer. She would work hours upon hours to make life tolerable and would spend countless hours involved in the lives of these now blossoming young sprites. Attending every school and social function and putting forth every bit of energy that is most difficult for a mother in a normal nuclear family yet never complaining or fading from the exertion. Our grown-up lady was now the center of the world of two blossoming young ladies who have seen their mother extend herself to extremes and made the utmost of what was dealt her. As the clock ticked away so did some of the relationships that our leading lady so desperately tried to make gratifying. But some unexplainable result always seemed to get in the way of her happiness. So as she zigzaged through her traffic lane and always kept hope of meeting the one who could fulfill her vision of her other half and bring her everything she has sought for oh so long.
In the time that our feminine superstar had struggled and stressed and worried of how she would greet each new day with an upbeat and positive attitude, our depraved male person deservedly went through struggles of his own. He succumbs to his gambling addiction and knows his life has bottomed out and sought and embraced a twelve step program to make an effort to check his vice. Taking solace in the assistance given him in time of need, he stayed and returned the kindness helping other poor souls in need of support. All the time he continued to make amends and accept the things he had done to others in this sick state he had groveled in. He grew a bit less evil and a touch more human. By the time his addiction is in check he has fathered a second child and is out of the house reeling in conjecture of what will happen to him in the future. He side-steps divorce, promising to become less headstrong and take a back seat to the events his friends and family see as a positive in our now grown burgeoning fellow.
Stepping back in time when life seemed so simple, our young man studied hard with his then young lady and filled his head with the answers she unselfishly delivered night after night until the day he took his first promotional exam and wrote the opening chapter to a recognized story of a young officer who made it much further than expected. The young lady instilled an attitude that he would take as far as possible for him. And as we will see has never left his deep and hidden determination to be somebody that young girl thought he would be.
Returning now to our rising someone, he is consumed with achieving something significant to cover the uneasiness and sadness he tends to struggle to overcome. He sets out to become educated and completes all the formal training he can. He dabbles in proprietorship and has a successful go of it. He retires with a feeling of accomplishing something but still feels empty. He has taken on responsibilities and completed the tasks but doesn't revel in what he has done. A turn in the private sector away from home and family only makes his revelation even more pronounced. He has come full circle loving, leaving, attempting to kindle a love and realizing he is not nor does not love.
We forward to a time that is now present-day. Our now mature lady has sent the fledglings out to be on their own and they are beautiful, charming, successful and grateful for all that has been given to them by our megastar. She has taught them well and they have an admiration for their mother that no man can comprehend unless they have been in this lady's shoes. The girls and our lady are a triumvirate that manages and cares for the lives of each. Always mindful of what they have been through and how singly and in total with the girls the three have overcome ten lifetimes of pain and turned each grimace into a smile and a laugh to face the next incident strongly and without fear.
In closing the curtain on the story of this strong, loving and vibrant woman, it is time to reveal that I was that young insensitive low-life that brought the pain and sorrow to this undeserving lady. I walked out on a colorful, pulsating young girl and brought physical and emotional anguish to her because I was self-centered. This lady took the dreadful events and accomplished so much. For every sad, woeful tale I saw and heard as a police officer this lady brought about a thousand happy and warm stories to those she came in contact with. I wish I could grant her a wish and make it come true so that she can have some of the rewards she so deservedly has earned. It would be a pleasure to reveal who she is but I believe that her humbleness would force her to deny the world the knowledge of her existence. She has time and time again played the role of nurse, teacher, confessor and lover and each and everyone who has received any of the fruits of her sweat and hard work would gladly today, no matter where they are, lay down their life for her. She is love personified and I am so happy to know that I am one of those who have been a recipient of her persona and have become a better person because of it.
For those who think that there is no light at the end of their tunnel, that their life is about to fall apart and never be the same again, think of the story of this sweet young girl that proved that with some perseverance and fortitude even the worst situation can be overcome. If this tiny petite lady can fight for her dignity and accomplish all she has then take a lesson from her text book and give it your all. She did it and now she is admired and respected by each and every one who hears her story. It is sad that I can't write everything that needs to be said and I am only allowed so many words. Maybe a book would better define what an angel my ex-wife IS, WAS and WILL ALWAYS BE.
