Remember Me When I'm Gone – the Shrine of Remembrance
The Shrine itself, ironically, was a matter of much contention. It was initially proposed that a memorial of some sort be erected for the soldiers from Victoria who fought in WWI. Choosing what the memorial would be was a much tougher task than it should have been. Though the idea was proposed in 1918, it took three years before the Shrine design, which was conceived by two WWI veterans was chosen.
Finally, after a great many debates and conflicts, the foundation stone for the Shrine of Remembrance was laid on the 11th of November, 1927 – a whole nine years after the idea of a memorial was proposed and accepted. It was exactly from that day seven years after that the Shrine was completed and dedicated.
Now, ANZAC day, which is 25th April, and Remembrance Day, the day the Shrine was dedicated, every year are observed at the Shrine of Remembrance. The Shrine itself is a work of art and beauty that brings out the poignancy and the tragedy of the war. It’s made of Tynong granite, and the design is inspired by both the Parthenon and the Tomb of Mausolus at Halicarnassus. The engraving on the marble Stone of Remembrance, which is in the Sanctuary of the Shrine, captures the message of the Shrine admirably – “Greater love hath no man.’ On Remembrance Day every year, at exactly eleven in the morning, a ray of sunlight illuminates ‘love’ on the engraving – a wonderful message.
Under the Sanctuary of the Shrine is the actual crypt, where the soldiers are remembered. Every single unit that fought as part of the Australian Imperial Force is listed on the bronze statue in the crypt, a statue of a father and son, which symbolically represents every soldier.
